Quartermaster Joseph Foster was on deck when he saw three objects careening at 3500 miles per hour over his Coast Guard cutter, the Mellon. Just ten minutes later, he learned of the sinking of a Soviet submarine, carrying three armed nuclear ballistic missiles and torpedoes, lost with all hands. The mysterious objects had approached from that same direction, ENE, 800 miles away!

The 1968 incident prompted the CIA (Project Azorian) to investigate and raise the sub.(After all, it was during the Cold War.)

You'll hear Joe Foster's personal account Tuesday, May 22 at Tredyffrin Public Library, Strafford, Pa. (6:30 p.m.)
describing this and three other mysterious sinkings: the Scorpion US nuclear submarine (lost in the Atlantic due to “mechanical” issues); Israeli, diesel electric submarine (sunk by an Egyptian destroyer in the Mediterranean) and finally, a French diesel electric submarine (while undergoing sea trials in the Atlantic).

Foster is a retired information technology, electronics and communications project manager. He led technical support teams as a contractor for the Department of Defense, the Justice Dept, and the FBI. His specialty was technology needs for computerized weapon sights and advanced energy systems: an automated gun sight with heads-up display, an advanced waste to energy system and the promotion of an innovative data storage technology using a crystal as a high capacity storage medium.
