Woodbury, NJ (August 28, 2017)—The Kiwanis Club of Greater Woodbury invites the public to learn about one of Woodbury’s own daughters who made history in the American War for Independence. On September 14, at noon, Anita Wheeler will discuss Ann Whitall, Fort Mercer, the Whitall House, the two major battles that took place there, and related lessons from history.

For example, during the battle of Red Bank, Ann Whitall stayed in her house, despite British warships firing cannons in her direction. Afterwards, Whitall opened her house to wounded soldiers—American and Hessian—and treated their wounds.

A docent for over 15 years at the James and Ann Whitall House, Wheeler initially belonged to the Ann Whitall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). “Ann Whitall is considered a patriot by the DAR because of her assistance to the wounded after the battles at Red Bank (Fort Mercer),” explained Wheeler.

“Based on the recent attention devoted to historic symbols by the public and the media, it is fitting to learn about our local history,” said Michael Smolensky, President-Elect of the club.

The meeting starts at 12 pm at Charlie Brown's, 111 N Broad Street.
